Chinese is one of the languages offered to University of Richmond students through the Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures. The language was first introduced on campus in 1999. Today, the program offers a variety of courses in Chinese language, culture and literature.
Beginning and intermediate courses provide students with basic communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, while advanced courses allow students to continue improving their basic skills at the same time they begin taking courses in Chinese literature. Advanced courses also provide an opportunity for heritage learners to further improve their proficiency in Chinese. In response to the rapid developments in U.S.–China relations and the growing number of Richmond students interested in Chinese and China, the Department of Modern Literatures and Cultures introduced a Chinese minor in the fall of 2001. In addition, students who major in international studies can choose a concentration in Asian studies.
